Calculus · Definite Integrals & Area

Shade signed area, compare Riemann sums with exact integration, and explore why negative regions subtract from a definite integral.

NCERT alignment: Class 12; chapter Integrals. Exam practice: JEE Main, JEE Advanced.

Learning objectives

Students should use the live simulator to test a quantitative prediction, read measurements and explain the limits of the model. Do not rely on the animation alone: calculate the expected result before adjusting controls.

Theory, equations and interpretations

Definite integral as net area

The area above the x-axis counts positively; below counts negatively. The geometric area is ∫ₐᵇ |f(x)| dx, which differs when the curve crosses the axis.

Important relation: ∫ₐᵇ f(x) dx = F(b)−F(a)

Riemann sums

Rectangles approximate the integral. Midpoint, left and right sampling produce different finite-N errors. For continuous f, these converge as N increases.

Important relation: Sₙ = Σ f(xᵢ*) Δx; Δx=(b−a)/N

Antiderivatives

The engine computes the exact result using antiderivatives for its three polynomial/trigonometric families.

Important relation: ∫ sin x dx = −cos x+C; ∫ x² dx = x³/3+C

Fundamental theorem

The accumulated signed area changes at a rate equal to the current function value, provided f is continuous.

Important relation: d/dx ∫ₐˣ f(t)dt = f(x)

Practical investigations

  1. Exact versus approximate: Set linear f=x on [0,3] and compare midpoint N=4 to the exact 4.5.
  1. Cancellation: For f=sin x and symmetric bounds −3 to 3, why is the net integral zero but total geometric area positive?
  1. Convergence: Compare N=4 and N=64 for f=x²−1 on [−1,2]; record approximation errors.
  1. Swap signs: Use f=x²−1 over [−1,1] and explain the negative exact integral.

Common misconceptions and limitations

A definite integral is signed area, not always geometric area. The rectangle sum samples left, right, or midpoints of equal subintervals. For geometric area we separately estimate ∫|f(x)|dx by numerical quadrature.
